Mirror, mirror on the roof

Mirror Edge, EI by fxEVo

Mirror’s Edge has been out, and drawing praise, for the iPad since May but those of us who haven’t yet shelled out a considerable sum for what amounts to (an amazingly beautiful and highly desirable, but still just) a glorified mp3 player have had to wait patiently for the game to make its iPod/iPhone debut.

Well, the wait is over. It’s actually been over for five days, going on six, but I just learned about it and I’m excited as hell.

I was in love with the first Mirror’s Edge trailers when they came out a few years back. Unfortunately my affection quickly turned into frustration as I tried out the demos, first on the PC and then, believing that moving from a keyboard to a DualShock would give me some sort of magical boost, on the PS3. It didn’t and I still sucked.

However, so attractive is the game’s art style that I think I’m going to give it a chance on yet another platform.

What about you? Did you like the first game? Do you plan on getting this iPod/iPhone version?

I have actually no idea if Mirror’s Edge has any mirrors in it, much less on the roof.

New blog advocates gaming culture in Switzerland

Sunset in Binii, Switzerland. Unrelated to post.

Switzerland is one of those countries notorious among gamers for its active anti-gaming politicians. You know, the sort that try to ban gaming altogether or at least reduce it to a children’s activity. Like Australia and neighbouring Germany.

Unlike Australia and Germany, however, the Swiss state is trying to mitigate the effect of one-sided propaganda. Not that the Swiss state is such a big fan of games per se; it’s just that the Swiss have a tradition to look at every issue from all sides and as thoroughly as possible. Because they’ll probably get to vote on it. So they’d better be prepared.

GameCulture.ch is a blog launched by the Pro Helvetia public foundation with the aim of “exploring the field of computer games as a new art form”.

(Deafening applause.)

The blog has entries in numerous languages and most of them have an English version.

(Standing ovation. Sporadic shouts of “bravo”.)

What does it smell like, then?

This interesting piece of videogame criticism is actually an advertisement — fine print in bottom right corner says Stop playing games. Start playing guitar. — but does this really take away from the validity of the message?
